Canada’s Enerkem, a leading waste-to-biofuels and green chemicals technology company, has entered into a partnership with the City of Edmonton and the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) to form an advanced energy research center.

The primary focus of the research center is for the development and demonstration of novel catalytic conversion processes used in the production of advanced biofuels and green chemicals from non-hazardous industrial waste and municipal waste. The center will also include laboratory equipment and a pilot plant, and will employ top researchers, particularly those who specialize in thermo-catalysis.

Vincent Chornet, President and Chief Executive Officer of Enerkem, said, “Enerkem is a proud partner in this novel project, which focuses on innovative technologies and research for tomorrow’s carbon constrained reality.”

Enerkem will work together with the City of Edmonton for the construction of the research center, which is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2010. AERI will contribute CA$9 million for the project.

The research center will be adjacent to a 36-million-liters per year commercial waste-to-biofuels production plant, which is being built as part of a comprehensive waste-to-biofuels initiative between the City of Edmonton, Enerkem, and the government of Alberta, through AERI. A municipal waste processing facility will also be constructed as part of the initiative.

Enerkem is a leading producer of advanced fuels and green chemicals using a mix of feedstock, forest biomass, and agricultural residues. Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, the company has offices in Sherbrooke and a commercial-scale facility in Westbury.
