German conglomerate Siemens is adding the power of the tides to their renewable energy product mix with its acquisition of a majority stake in Marine Current Turbines Ltd., a developer of tidal power generation projects and one of the first to have such a project producing power for the grid.

E.U. wind rides on record R.E. growth in 2011; Uncertainties remain New wind energy installations in Europe worth $16.74 billion remained strong last year, riding on an aggressive renewables drive according to the industry’s umbrella group, although concerns linger for this year onwards. The European Wind Energy Association said the continent installed 9,616 megawatts of new wind energy capacity in 2011, almost similar to the 9,648 MW raised in 2010.

Atlantis Resources Corporation, which makes tidal turbines that look much like ordinary wind turbines – except that they are deployed on the seabed – is bringing its unit for testing to a more advanced facility. Atlantis is a vertically integrated marine power company in Britain. Exclusive: German company’s organic solar cell hits most bright spots A Dresden-based company is covering several bases in the organic solar cell niche with which it hopes to make an impact in the building-integrated photovoltaics market – and beyond. The company specializes in organic solar cells, photovoltaic devices that use thin layers of organic materials with semiconductor properties. In December last year they achieved a conversion efficiency of 9.8 percent for their product, as confirmed by the Fraunhofer ISE CalLab.

Two companies have signed up to jointly develop a 200-megawatt wave energy project off the coast of Orkney, northern Scotland. E.I.B. lends $228 million euros for EV’s from Renault

French automaker Renault Group was granted a 180-million euro loan from the European Investment Bank for research and development efforts in creating the next generation of batteries and motors for electric vehicles. The loan will be deployed in France to developing products and processes for lithium-ion batteries and engine technologies for electric powertrains. Company gets concession for 127.6-MW hydro plant in Albania

Renewable energy generation company 3Power Energy Group Inc. was granted rights to develop a 127.6-megawatt hydropower plant in Albania, following the signing of a framework agreement with a local investment group. The deal gives 3Power Energy 75 percent of the concession rights for the power plant to be put at the Shala River and is scheduled for grid connection by 2015. Estimate project investment cost is $180 million.

Global smart meter shipments reached 19.2 million in the third quarter of 2011, a 5.3 percent increase over the second quarter of 2011 with North America’s Landis+Gyr maintaining a leadership position by cornering a 25 percent share of cumulative smart meter vendor selections. “Global smart grid deployments continue to enjoy strong growth momentum, particularly those involving smart meter rollouts,” says senior analyst Neil Strother of Pike Research.
