German conglomerate Siemens is adding the power of the tides to their renewable energy product mix with its acquisition of a majority stake in Marine Current Turbines Ltd., a developer of tidal power generation projects and one of the first to have such a project producing power for the grid.

Wind power giant Vestas Wind Systems A.S. said last year’s financial results deviated significantly from what the company expected, as it continues to be more aggressive in the wind energy service category to achieve more profits. Calling 2011 “a tough year,” Vestas recalled that it had to abandon targets, issue profit warnings and lay off employees.

New wind energy installations in Europe worth $16.74 billion remained strong last year, riding on an aggressive renewables drive according to the industry’s umbrella group, although concerns linger for this year onwards. The European Wind Energy Association said the continent installed 9,616 megawatts of new wind energy capacity in 2011, almost similar to the 9,648 MW raised in 2010.

Atlantis Resources Corporation, which makes tidal turbines that look much like ordinary wind turbines – except that they are deployed on the seabed – is bringing its unit for testing to a more advanced facility. Atlantis is a vertically integrated marine power company in Britain. A Dresden-based company is covering several bases in the organic solar cell niche with which it hopes to make an impact in the building-integrated photovoltaics market – and beyond. The company specializes in organic solar cells, photovoltaic devices that use thin layers of organic materials with semiconductor properties. In December last year they achieved a conversion efficiency of 9.8 percent for their product, as confirmed by the Fraunhofer ISE CalLab.

Chinese solar manufacturer Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. entered a supply agreement with Germany’s IBC Solar A.G. to deliver up to 200 megawatts of multi- and mono-crystalline solar photovoltaic modules this year. Two companies have signed up to jointly develop a 200-megawatt wave energy project off the coast of Orkney, northern Scotland. French engineering conglomerate Alstom and Scottish marine energy company SSE Renewables entered a joint venture agreement for obtaining permits for the Costa Head Wave Project at the Crown Estate’s Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Strategic Area.

French automaker Renault Group was granted a 180-million euro loan from the European Investment Bank for research and development efforts in creating the next generation of batteries and motors for electric vehicles. The loan will be deployed in France to developing products and processes for lithium-ion batteries and engine technologies for electric powertrains. The main objective would be to make EV’s more competitive and speed up their development and acceptance in the mass market.

Three consortia led by Iberdrola S.A. and two rival utilities in France have all submitted bids to secure five spots in the French coast earmarked for the development of the country’s first offshore wind farms. The French government had announced plans to have 6 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2020 as it tries to meet a target of sourcing 23 percent of its energy from renewables by 2020.

One of the largest deals in the stationary fuel cell industry ever signed, United States-based fuel cell company ClearEdge Power and Austrian low-carbon utility Güssing Renewable Energy G.m.b.H., entered a $500-million, nine-year agreement to deliver 50 megawatts’ worth of energy derived from fuel cells by 2020.

Landis+Gyr A.G. has acquired Ecologic Analytics after buying all of the remaining stocks of the smart meter data management company for an undisclosed sum. Ecologic has been operating for 10 years in Minnesota making meter data management or MDM systems. It acts as the smart grid's nervous system - collecting data from two-way meters, and then sending them to utilities.

Renewable energy generation company 3Power Energy Group Inc. was granted rights to develop a 127.6-megawatt hydropower plant in Albania, following the signing of a framework agreement with a local investment group. The deal gives 3Power Energy 75 percent of the concession rights for the power plant to be put at the Shala River and is scheduled for grid connection by 2015. Estimate project investment cost is $180 million.

Global smart meter shipments reached 19.2 million in the third quarter of 2011, a 5.3 percent increase over the second quarter of 2011 with North America’s Landis+Gyr maintaining a leadership position by cornering a 25 percent share of cumulative smart meter vendor selections. “Global smart grid deployments continue to enjoy strong growth momentum, particularly those involving smart meter rollouts,” says senior analyst Neil Strother of Pike Research.
