Peru: solid waste treatment plant for 200,000 inaugurated
At least 200,000 residents are poised to benefit from the new Cajamarca waste treatment plant. In Peru, a solid waste treatment plant that can handle 120,000 t/d of waste and benefit 200,000 residents was inaugurated last week by environment minister Antonio Brack, according to the Andina News Agency through Business News Americas (BNA).
The plant will be located in the northern highlands region of Cajamarca, as part of the municipality’s integrated solid waste management plan. The plan includes educational campaigns and the promotion of environmentally-friendly practices such as the use of fabric-made bags in place of plastic bags, according to Andina and BNA.
A total of 11 metric tons of solid waste was reportedly produced by the municipalities in 2008, said a municipal solid waste management study. Only 19.3% of the said waste was disposed in sanitary landfills located in the cities or municipalities of Lima, Callao, Áncash, Junín, Cuzco, and Cajamarca.
