Sustainability-savvy businesses get more profit, competitive edge – M.I.T. Corporations that are regularly practicing sustainability measures stand to gain more, a recent report from business journal MIT Sloan Management Review and The Boston Consulting Group showed. The study, which involved 2,874 executives in 113 countries, found that two-thirds of global companies see sustainability as a competitive necessity in today’s marketplace, up from 55 percent a year ago.

Constellation Energy launches third EcoStar Grant program

Constellation Energy, an energy producer based in Maryland, is accepting applications for its yearly EcoStar Grant program. The program awards community-based projects in pollution prevention, education and outreach, energy efficiency, conservation and community activism up to $5,000 to implement their projects. The grant money will be provided by the Constellation Energy Foundation.

The garments, designed for everyday stylish casual wear, include recycled polyester, which comes from crude oil; organic cotton; and lyocell, a light and silky textile made from regenerated cellulosic fiber that comes from eucalyptus wood pulp.

The Coca-Cola Company, the world’s largest soft drink maker, signed up three bio-based material makers in the United States to develop bottles made entirely of plants instead of petroleum-based plastics. In a statement yesterday, Coca-Cola said Virent Inc., Gevo Inc. and Avantium each received multimillion-dollar contracts to expand the company’s recyclable “PlantBottles.”

AES Corp. closes DPL acquisition

Power producer AES Corp. has finalized its acquisition of public utility DPL Inc. yesterday, having received all necessary regulatory approvals and consents. The deal will add 13 power distribution companies and more than 100 generation plants with 40,000 megawatts installed capacity in AES’ portfolio. DPL’s headquarters will remain in Dayton, Ohio. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

Home furnishings retailer Ikea installed four electric vehicle charging stations at its Carson, California branch together with EV infrastructure company Ecotality. Ecotality is overseeing the installation of approximately 14,000 commercial and residential charging stations in 18 cities and major metropolitan areas in six states and the District of Columbia. To do this, Ecotality is tapping a public-private effort funded by a Department of Energy grant.

Fuel Tech Inc., which provides solutions for the optimization of combustion systems and emissions control for utility and industrial applications, saw an increase in revenues and net income for the three-month period which ended September 30, 2011. Revenue stood at $24.0 million or an increase of 19 percent, compared to $20.3 million in the prior-year period.
