Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has announced that the company will produce electric vehicles (EVs) at its Oppama Plant starting on the fall of 2010.

The Oppama plant is located at Natsushima-cho, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa, Japan. Kanagawa is the core base of Nissan’s manufacturing and will be positioned as the model plant for best practices in EV production.

The plant will start production with a capacity of 50,000 units of EVs a year and will continuously increase until the start of EV mass-marketing in 2012.

The motors and inverters will be built at the Yokohama Plant and initially at the Zamma Operations Center. In addition, Automotive Energy Supply Corporation, one of Nissan’s affiliated companies based in the Zama Operations Center, will produce laminated-type compact lithium ion batteries for EVs.
