Clinton Foundation to help develop two 3,000-MW solar power plants in India
Through its Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), the foundation coordinates with governments on alternative energy projects that aim for significant results by 2020.The Clinton Foundation of Former US president Bill Clinton is negotiating with the governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan, two states of India, for the development of two 3,000-megawatt solar power plants, the Indo-Asian News Service reported yesterday (June 10). New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah announced the project recently at the launch of Samsung’s new solar-powered mobile handset.
A fund of $12 billion for supporting green energy initiatives is reportedly under the management of the Clinton Foundation. GE Energy and Microsoft are among the foundation’s corporate supporters.
A 70% reduction of power generation costs can be made through new, renewable energy systems, the report said. At present, the world’s largest solar power plant is in the US, at the Mojave Desert in California. Its capacity is projected to increase by up to 900 megawatts after a few years.
Discussions between the Clinton Foundation and India’s fourth largest state, Andra Pradesh, are also ongoing for the development of another solar power project.
Formally called the William J. Clinton Foundation, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the development of solutions is at its core. Through its Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), the foundation coordinates with governments on alternative energy projects that aim for significant results by 2020.
