Egypt has recently launched a bidding invitation for a 250-megawatt (MW) wind project on its eastern coast. The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) announced that the bidding will be open to private investors on a build-operate-own (BOO) basis.
The bidding terms require the project developer to design, finance, construct, own, and operate the wind farm for 20 to 25 years. The electricity generated will be bought by EETC for 25 years.
Bidders will undergo two phases: (1) a prequalification through a short-list selection phase and wind measurement period, and; (2) a request for proposals, followed by a selection of the winning bidder.
A request-for-pre-qualification (RFPQ) form can be obtained from the EETC office starting on May 14 for €300. A developers’ meeting is scheduled in late June, further details of which will be sent to interested developers through mail. Deadline for submission of accomplished RFPQs is on July 21 at 12 p.m.
Egypt already has existing wind projects on its eastern region, along the Red Sea coast. The wind farms are located in the resort cities of Zafarana and Hurghada. The government intends to increase energy output from the said areas.
